I started to learn embroidery for a project entitled “Bridal Survival Kit” and it didn’t take long for me to find myself absorbed in a daily practice.
I arrived at my primary subject, koi with coin while studying in Tokyo, Japan on an Independence Foundation Grant. I resided in the Asakusa neighborhood, which maintains a long history of local craft traditions and is home to many shops selling raw materials and finished products. Their museum features a library of short films documenting masters patiently sharing their techniques in everything from sword making to embroidery. Having the time and access to instruction and materials, I would take frequent trips to the famous Sensō-ji temple to sketch koi to further develop into embroideries.
